J&A Service Pro Mod Driver Steven Whiteley Rates His 2018 Season As Well As Tells About His Off

The conclusion of the E3 Spark Plugs NHRA Pro Mod series presented by J&A Service was last weekend at The Strip At Las Vegas Motor Speedway. For J&A Service driver Steven Whiteley, the conclusion of the season mimicked his overall 2018 performance. We sat down with Whiteley to hear what he had to say about his 2018 season, what we can expect from him in the off season, and what it’s like racing under the J&A banner.

With the conclusion of the 2018 Pro Mod Season, how would you rate your overall performance?

I would give our team a C at best. We had some heroic runs this season, experienced some race day troubles, and overall need improvement in order to run for a 2019 Pro Mod Championship. J&A Service has a dominant presence not only in the pro mod category with your dad Jim also piloting his own car, but also in Top Alcohol Funny Car with your step mom Annie, and in Pro Stock Motorcycle with championship rider Angelle Sampey and your step brother Cory Reed, do you ever feel pressure to perform for the team or is it more of a support system going out and doing what you love?

Absolutely there's pressure. When one person does well, you feel like you have to be right on board. The same happens when a family member loses. You want to represent your family the best way that you can!

You rolled out a brand new 2018 ZL1 Camaro Chassis and Body in Topeka, what has it been like learning a new setup?

The new car has been a bit of a learning curve as far as driving. I know it doesn't react the same to tuning calls like the Cadillac did. No two cars are the same.

You ran your career best at the second to last race of the season, the Charlotte Nationals, what does that say about your overall season progress as well as with your new ZL1 Camaro?

I’d say that goes to show that a blind squirrel finds a nut every now and then. We have had a tough year. The new car is a good car, but the old car wasn't a problem. A new car isn’t going to take us to the pole and win races, but this car is nice. This season we have had ups and downs. I feel the record run and then losing 1st round is an example of that. We have to better. Simple as that. What can you say about the pro mod competition in 2018? With record breaking runs and the fastest field in pro mod, do you feel like you are apart of history or writing your name in the record books?

The Pro Mod Competition is crazy! The reason why we race in this class is because of the difficulty. Each round win is difficult to come by, let alone winning a race. That’s all I have to say. Who has been your biggest competition in 2018?

As always, we are our biggest competition. Do you have plans to run any independent races in the off season? We will run the snow bird nationals in December at Bradenton Motorsports Park in addition to testing when possible.

What will you do to prepare for the 2019 season?

The list is a million pages long. All I will say is we have our work cut out for us. And we aren't afraid to outwork these other guys.
